The Characteristics of Agro-Climatic Environments in Subtropical Islands around Japan

چکیده

The agro-climatic environments in subtropical islands around Japan were analyzed by using meteorological data (average for 1971–2000). This study found that the horizontal distribution of monthly mean temperatures in both the subtropical islands and Japan’s main islands can be expressed accurately as a function of latitude for all seasons. These relationships cannot be applied to the monthly mean temperatures in the eastern areas of the Asian continent except for summer. On the other hand, the annual mean diurnal ranges of temperature in the subtropical islands are around 5oC, which are about only half of those in the inland areas of Japan’s main islands. The ocean has the effect of reducing the temporal and spatial variations in temperature due to its large heat capacity. The strength of this effect depends on the temporal and spatial scale of temperature variations. That is, although the thermal effect of the ocean to the diurnal temperature variations is restricted to the subtropical islands and the coastal areas of Japan’s main islands, the seasonal temperature variations in all areas of Japan are under the influence of the thermal environment of the Pacific Ocean. The ocean also contributes to supplying water vapor into the atmosphere, resulting in more precipitation over all areas of Japan. Water balances between precipitation and potential evaporation at several sites were estimated in order to elucidate the hydrological properties in the subtropical islands. Phylogeography of the Coastal Mosquito Aedes togoi across Climatic Zones: Testing an Anthropogenic Dispersal Hypothesis

The coastal mosquito Aedes togoi occurs more or less continuously from subarctic to subtropic zones along the coasts of the Japanese islands and the East Asian mainland. It occurs also in tropical Southeast Asia and the North American Pacific coast, and the populations there are thought to have been introduced from Japan by ship. To test this hypothesis, the genetic divergence among geographic ...

Effect of climatic conditions on epidemic patterns of influenza in Okinawa, Japan, during the pandemic of 2009: surveillance of rapid antigen test results.

Climatic conditions may have affected the incidence of influenza during the pandemic of 2009 as well as at other times. This study evaluated the effects of climatic conditions on influenza incidence in Okinawa, a subtropical region in Japan, during the 2009 pandemic using surveillance data from rapid antigen test (RAT) results. Weekly RAT results performed in four acute care hospitals in th...

Simulating coconut growth, development and yield with the InfoCrop-coconut model.

Simulation modeling of perennial crops has immense potential for generating information for plantation managers. We report the development of the InfoCrop-coconut model and its application to coconut (Cocos nucifera L.) growing in diverse tropical and subtropical environments. The model is based on the generic crop model InfoCrop that simulates various annual crops in tropical and subtropical r...

Multiclass Classification of Agro-Ecological Zones for Arabica Coffee: An Improved Understanding of the Impacts of Climate Change

Cultivation of Coffea arabica is highly sensitive to and has been shown to be negatively impacted by progressive climatic changes. Previous research contributed little to support forward-looking adaptation. Agro-ecological zoning is a common tool to identify homologous environments and prioritize research. We demonstrate here a pragmatic approach to describe spatial changes in agro-climatic zon...

Geographic variation in body form of prehistoric Jomon males in the Japanese archipelago: its ecogeographic implications.

Diversity of human body size and shape is often biogeographically interpreted in association with climatic conditions. According to Bergmann's and Allen's rules, populations in regions with a cold climate are expected to display an overall larger body and smaller/shorter extremities than those in warm/hot environments. In the present study, the skeletal limb size and proportions of prehistoric ...
